Questions About Hot Water Tanks
Not very many years ago, a discussion regarding how you got hot water to come out of the faucet would go something like this.
- How many gallons/litres is your water heater (hot water tank)?
- Is the tank heated with gas or electricity?
- What quality would you like (usually a good-better–best proposition)?
That would pretty much take care of the sales side of the equation and at that point you would pick out the appropriate “tank” then somebody would come out, install it and if you were lucky, dispose of the old one for you. Canada Furnace doesn’t leave any old stuff behind, unless you want us to – and no, taking your “old” spouse away isn’t part of the deal!
Hot Water Tank Options
The scenario can still certainly remain that way today, but the options are becoming more varied, interesting and dynamic. At Canada Furnace, we want to ensure that our customers are fully aware of all the available alternatives in today’s world to produce hot water tanks. Hot water tank’s themselves haven’t changed that much in recent times, although there is a greater variety of sizes and different footprints now available with respect to space restrictions (some tanks are shorter and squatter while others are made taller and skinnier). In terms of price and quality a great deal of what that represents comes down to the level of warranty coverage (more on hot water tank warranties later).
On Demand Water Heating
In addition to the old “tried and true” hot water tank, the development in recent years and marketing of “on demand” or “tankless” water heaters has definitely had an impact on the marketplace. On Demand water heaters have been available in the North American market for no more than a decade but now sell in significant numbers. While a more expensive initial proposition On Demand water heaters offer some compelling differences to the traditional hot water tank water heater. For one thing, the On Demand heaters essentially will produce hot water for as long as you want it – feel like a four hour shower (four hour shower – sounds like a song title) you can have one and the hot water will just keep on flowing. Additionally, they are highly proficient from a fuel consumption standpoint and the fact that there is no need to continue keeping a large volume of water continuously heated provides considerable gains from that process as well. Essentially, when you turn on the faucet (or washing machine, dishwasher, what have you) the on demand device lights up and instantaneously (well, almost) begins creating the hot water and won’t stop until you turn it off. The Navien on demand water heaters that Canada Furnace supplies are also fully stainless steel construction, providing a life span upwards of 25 years as opposed to a decent quality hot water tank which is estimated to last about 10 years at best.
Pros and Cons of On Demand
It’s been said that “there is no such thing as Utopia” and one could suppose that applies to the on demand water heater as well. Like most things, there are trade-offs with tankless water heaters. We’ve mentioned the cost, which can be upwards of four times that of a conventional tank heater (although offset by the greater lifespan and fuel efficiency to a large degree), but more importantly it can revolve around the issue of application. One limitation to even the largest capacity of on demand water heaters is that of flow capacity. They are usually limited by how many “draw demands” are possible and the upward limit of the largest units is about four. By draw, we mean how many faucets (showers, washing machines, dishwashers etc.) can run at the same time. In other words, if you have family with 3 teenagers and two or three adults all wanting to use hot water at the same time, an on demand set up may not be able to provide sufficient capacity for you. Having said that, in most instances they provide more than plentiful hot water for the majority of home owners.
Another interesting twist to the on demand water heaters story concerns those homes that are heated by http://www.hydronicheating.net/ (hot water boilers). Navien (and other manufacturers) now construct a compact home heating boiler that is also an on demand water heater. For those families looking to replace an old boiler system, these devices open up some nice opportunities. There is initially the space saving gained from the fact that these new combination boilers are considerably smaller than conventional ones (a box like device that mounts on the wall) plus even more space opened up by getting rid of the hot water tank. You can even keep the tank if it’s in good shape, disconnect the heating element and plumb it to the On Demand heater for an additional passive source of hot water – lots of options and that’s always a good thing.
Some people are even going to great lengths to utilize other methods for heating for hot water. Solar, geothermal sources and other seemingly esoteric methods to enjoy a hot bath are being attempted regularly. There is nothing specifically wrong with any of these methods, but they do fall somewhat into the esoteric category.
Variety of capacities
For most of us living in the real world, things like budget, time and simplicity are foremost and to that end, more conventional ideas make the most sense. In terms of cost, the old but reliable method of heating up water and storing it for future use in an insulated tank is still the most reasonable answer. Canada Furnace offers conventional water heaters from 2 quality manufacturers; Bradford & White and Rheem. They are covered by a “no leak” warranty for 8 years (i.e. if the unit springs a leak within the 8 year coverage period, the manufacturer will provide a new tank at no cost). Both are solid national brands with genuine warranty coverage, first rate parts back up and Canada Furnace completes the deal with our own labour warranty. It should be noted that many Hot Water Tank warranties are pro-rated over the life span of the unit, leaving little “in the bank” when the unit gets old. To answer the question about paying more for a hot water tank with a longer warranty, the answer will generally be no. The tank itself is the same and as the warranty is as mentioned an ever diminishing affair, there is normally no advantage to the higher up front cost. Hot water tanks are available from Canada Furnace in a variety of capacities from 40, 50 and 60 US gallon and other special order sizes. Heating elements can be either natural gas or electric.
